With over 25 years of experience, Footprints as a not for profit organisation is well regarded for working with people from diverse backgrounds and with complex needs.
Footprints continues to develop, maintain and enhance our interconnection with our community to enable the delivery of appropriate and necessary services to vulnerable groups.
Footprints as a client-centred organisation, is focused on providing safe, reliable and quality services that are inclusive. Our motto is ‘positive steps with you’ which is the premise from which we practice, by walking alongside people with dignity and respect empowering them to live independently in the community.
Footprints has been a highly regarded provider of psychosocial, disability and aged care services since its inception in 1991. Commencing as New Farm Community Options in 1991, Footprints has now expanded into multiple locations (Kingston, West End, Fortitude Valley and Strathpine) providing holistic supports to people from Logan through to Caboolture and Bribie Island.
Footprints symbolises people walking beside one another and offering support where needed to achieve individual goals. Footprints has a history of community engagement across Southeast Queensland, working with socially isolated and financially disadvantaged people as well as older local residents, younger people with disability, people with mental illness, homeless and those needing housing supports. Through believing in the potential of people and working at their pace, we enable people to articulate their needs and facilitate the design of the services and supports they need to enhance their lifestyle. Complex care needs require holistic, flexible, coordinated and integrated service responses around a range of life issues such as housing, income, physical, medical, social and psychological needs. Our approach works because we value the unique capabilities of each person and the resourcefulness of the community as we tailor and design our services to meet the needs of each person. Footprints provides support in the community for people who are ageing, community care for people with disabilities, centre based respite for older persons and people with disability, recovery and well-being for people with mental illness, community care for people who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness. More than 90% of our clients lack formal support, more than 70% reside in public, community housing or boarding houses and hostels, or are homeless. More than 75% of these individuals have a disability, with over half of these experiencing a severe and persistent mental illness.
At Footprints we believe that our community is more than just our location. It is all the people that we work with, the environment in which we operate, the services we provide, and the partnerships we create. We are committed to continuing our work within our community and to being a flexible and responsive organisation that takes positive steps to meet changing need.

Project Summary:The Stand Up Step Out program (affectionately referred to as SUSO) is an initiative providing mobile outreach support and services in a re-purposed council bus. The service targets vulnerable people currently experiencing homelessness and social / financial hardship in the outer suburbs of Brisbane. The project provides ongoing flexible outreach support through provision for showers, laundry and connection and in doing so building meaningful relationships for long-term community impact. The project aims to complete 750 shower, laundry or connection services for marginalised people in the outer suburbs of Brisbane per year.
The outreach approach enables Footprints to begin to restore dignity to those people experiencing homelessness or isolation by being able to offer shower and laundry services, counselling and relationship building opportunities as well as appropriate referrals for ongoing assistance. The uniqueness of this service lies in its focus to service the outer suburbs of Brisbane where there has been an identified deficiency of homelessness services.
SUSO is currently servicing a range of locations with the primary target group being vulnerable people who are currently experiencing homelessness and social or financial hardship in the outer northern suburbs of Brisbane (Wynnum, Capalaba, Clontarf).
Broadly, the number of homeless people in Australia jumped by more than 14,000 — or 14 per cent — in the five years to 2016, which also reveals an increase in older women on the streets and a growing group living in overcrowded accommodation. Homelessness increased in three states, one of which was Queensland, with Brisbane seeing one of the fastest increases in Australia, up 32% from 2011 to 2016. Data also shows that rough sleeping (the most extreme form of homelessness) grew by 20% from 2011 to 2016. Specifically, ABS 2016 Census Data highlights there were 434 homeless people in Logan-Kingston-Woodridge area, 145 in the Redcliffe-Kippa-Ring-Scarborough area, and 107 in the Sandgate-Brighton area. This project meets unmet needs by targeting people experiencing homelessness and at risk of homelessness and who are dealing with hardship in these locations, by providing flexible outreach support through provision of showers, laundry and connection. In doing so building meaningful relationships for long-term community impact. With the rising cost of living and household expenses the burden on families and singles in the community is beginning to show it’s strain.
Project Outcomes:The project aims to complete 750 shower, laundry or connection services for marginalised people in the outer suburbs of Brisbane for the next 12-month period. The number of potential beneficiaries is broad and varied as we provide a daily ‘walk-in’ service that importantly places no cap on the number of people needing support. SUSO currently operates in the outer suburbs of Brisbane (Wynnum, Capalaba, Clontarf) where there has been an identified lack of support for people experiencing homelessness.
Footprints will track the programs participants demographics at each engagement, measuring achievements through collating the following;
- How many participants access the daily amenity services.
- Key data to measure outcomes are: number of showers, laundry services and connection services provided.
Footprints will also provide qualified staff members and volunteers so that people can engage with professionals who are there to listen to people experiencing distress and assist in connecting them into services for longer term support.
In the last four months, Stand Up Step Out has delivered 40 service runs, 1197 hours of support, 161 services across laundry, shower and care coordination. The SUSO bus traveled 2391kms across the outer suburbs of Brisbane attending locations in Redcliffe, Lawnton, Sandgate, Clontarf, Wynnum, Capalaba, Acacia Ridge.
To date the SUSO services have been restricted by limited funding and resourcing. With an increase in funding, the deliverables of this project are set to be both sustainable and grow year on year.
