PROJECT SUMMARY

Women and children from women-headed households (WHH) in Eastern Indonesia are caught in a cycle of extreme poverty, discrimination and lack of education. This project will partner with local grassroots organisation PEKKA NTT (‘PEKKA’) to break that cycle, making sustainable improvements for their education, food security and economic independence.

PEKKA has built and supports an active network of over 2,600 WHH in Eastern Indonesia. It supports and advocates for WHH lacking economic means and legal and social protections. PEKKA is a creative and resilient organisation run by and for women from WHH. This 12-month program will provide: 120 bursaries ( from primary school to university), two Children’s Festivals (involving 200 children in the planning and delivery of cultural and environmental education), new women-run food gardens benefitting 30 women, and further empowering 120 women through agriculture training and equipment to overcome food shortages and provide rare opportunities to generate income.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

The expected outcomes are:
- Improved school enrolment, retention and achievement rates.
- Improved capacity to plan and implement a marketable food crop
- Improved nutrition and health of women and their dependents working in the cooperative gardens.
- Increased skills, pride in culture and confidence of children attending the Children’s Festival.
- Reduced manual labour for women due to the purchase of the coconut milling machine

Profile of Indigo Foundation

Indigo Foundation

Indigo Foundation is an innovative international community development organisation based in Australia. For over 20 years, we have supported grassroots organisations to pursue their development goals. We currently support with 7 local partners across 6 countries - Afghanistan, India, Rwanda, Indonesia, Bougainville, and Timor Leste. We are a proudly nimble and creative organisation, with committed volunteers and supporters across Australia.

We support our community partners to empower women and girls, improve education and health outcomes, secure better livelihoods for families and defend human rights in their communities. We believe powerful and positive change is achieved through community control over decision-making, honest communication between communities and ourselves and building strong community organisations.

The evidence over more than two decades tells us that community-led development works to transform lives and build more resilient communities. Our approach to partnership is built on respect, mutual learning and accepting that progress and setbacks are a normal part of community development.
