Based in Melbourne, Victorian Opera is the state’s professional opera company and a national leader in presenting unforgettable opera experiences. Over 30,000 people experience our work annually through live performances and streamed events throughout Victoria. We premiere at least one new Australian work each year and have staged 22 new works since the company formed in 2005. Recognised for our unique voice and contribution to the country’s operatic landscape, Victorian Opera became an Australian Major Performing Arts company in 2019.

Victorian Opera presents an annual mainstage season of traditional opera, commissioned works and concert performances, as well as a youth opera, schools, families and children’s productions. We collaborate with some of Australia’s leading companies, venues and learning institutions, employ hundreds across the creative industries annually, and recruit some of the finest singers from Australia and around the world. The next generation of talent is developed from the ground up through the Victorian Opera Youth Chorus Ensemble (VOYCE) and our innovative Access All Areas: Livestream Program. We are committed to the accessibility of opera through livestreamed workshops and performances, tactile tours, and audio described and relaxed performances.

“I firmly believe the arts enrich our cultural landscape and connect people across society. The operatic voice is the most powerful and passionate instrument with the capacity to move and inspire audiences, and my support of Victorian Opera reflects my commitment to nurturing this art form and its talented young singers.”

We are committed to making creative, accessible opera for everyone, and evolving the art form in unique, adventurous ways. We believe in the unlimited potential of this artform to move people, all people. To spark conversation, to help us understand one another and to remind us of what it means to be alive and to live in a vibrant cultural city. But that potential can only be realised if we throw out the rules and make opera for everyone. If we re-imagine the very idea of what opera can be and then start creating contemporary storytelling relevant to everyone in our community.

At Victorian Opera, the role of patrons, trusts and foundations is crucial to the work we do. Their support allows our company to go beyond the scope of our programming and reimagine the potential of opera, for everyone. Through their generous support and trust, Victorian Opera is able to reach for the stars to realise ambitious projects, reflect the diversity of our culture, and create accessible, world-class opera that inspires and captivates our audiences. As Australia’s leading developer of new opera, patronage also enables us to take chances on works years in advance. It ensures we can support the very best talent, be it composers, directors, designers, or extraordinary singers, to produce these operas in workshops and bring them to life.

“Terry and I have a particular passion for traditional opera. However, we very much enjoy Victorian Opera’s innovative programming from traditional opera to music theatre and cabaret. The company is recognised and admired for reimagining the art form, ensuring its continued audience appeal and patronage, and creating accessible, world-class opera. We are both proud to support Victorian Opera.”

Victorian Opera nurtures aspiring young singers with formative musical training and expert guidance through a raft of education pathways, providing a platform to launch future careers. Artists, such as acclaimed soprano Nicole Car, have earnt their stripes through our programs and Youth Opera productions; Nicole starred in our very first.

Our donors and patrons see firsthand the impact their support has on Victorian Opera: the evolution of artistic work, its quality and relevance, and confidence in long-term planning. Our company understands implicitly that recognising our philanthropic community is vital to build momentum. We acknowledge our patrons and invite them to join us as each season evolves through personal communication, functions, talks, and opportunities to meet artists.
