Narrative and Art Therapy Workshop Support -

Broken to Brilliant is a not for profit charity founded by domestic violence survivors to help and mentor fellow survivors to create a new chapter in their lives. We assist victims- women, children and men who have already left an abusive environment with their long-term recovery and to break the cycle of Domestic Violence.

The World Health Organisation has found that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime, and 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner.
Men are more likely to experience violence from strangers and in a public place; women are most likely to know the perpetrator (often their current or a previous partner) and the violence usually takes place in their home. One in six Australian women and one in 19 men have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).

Broken to Brilliant’s goal is to reduce the long-term impact of domestic violence by increasing
1. Financial capacity by building their financial security through employment, assets and financial education and independence.
2. Self-esteem.
3. Quality of life, happiness and well-being

Broken to Brilliant does this by:
a) Publishing books and documentaries authored by and featuring domestic violence survivors who bravely share some of their story and detail the strategies they used to rebuild happy and successful lives
b) Offering education for family and friends of domestic violence survivors
c) Providing virtual and face-to-face education, training, coaching, mentoring
e) Facilitating domestic violence research to identify key factors that help to build domestic violence survivors resilience and personal success.
f) Raising awareness and funds to help rebuild lives after domestic violence by undertaking community campaigns that focus on building emotional resilience, financial independence and promoting healthy and respectful relationships

Project Summary:

The Charity Broken to Brilliant aims to support the long-term recovery of survivors of domestic violence by providing programs and information that help domestic violence survivors beyond the initial crisis and breaking free from the abuse cycle. Strategies that survivors developed and implemented in the process of rebuilding their lives are shared by publishing multi-author books so that their stories can be used to help others.

Broken to Brilliant will host a 4-day live-in writing workshop for 10 domestic violence survivors. This workshop will help the authors write their story of overcoming domestic and family violence. Recreating a life story that does not deny the trauma, but the story formation conveys strength and is solution-based, highlighting one’s potential for growth in the face of adversity, helps to restore hope for the victim and the readers. These stories share the lessons of strength and success from domestic violence survivors and are shared as a road map to recovery for fellow survivors.

The requested funds will be used for three technical writing sessions that build the writing skills of domestic violence survivors as these sessions cover sentence structure, grammar, story construction, editing, proof reading. In addition, each author will receive a one-on-one thirty-minute writing coaching session which will provide feedback on their own writing.

We are also building the capacity of 2 previous authors and domestic violence survivors to build their self-esteem and business acumen.
One, an Art Therapist we have invited to conduct two 2-hour art therapy sessions for the authors. During these art sessions they will create a painting that is symbolic of moving from being broken from abuse to be their brilliant self. Art therapy will be beneficial to the authors as a means of increasing creativity, releasing stress, anxiety and it will help to address past traumas.
The other previous author and DV survivor who has recently completed her degree as a Psychotherapist, will be attending in that capacity to support this workshop of authors throughout their writing process and allows Broken to Brilliant to support DV survivors in creating new paths in their lives.

Broken to Brilliant undertakes this story telling and creative arts approach as voicing one’s experience’ (Kosenko, K , & Laboy, J 2014) and “creative expressions as a self-help tool. It facilitates healing from the trauma of domestic violence and is empowering and therapeutic for survivors to be asked to tell their stories with a dominant plot of survival and recovery. (Oke, M 2008)

The 4-day live in workshop provides a supportive environment and a connection with other survivors. The activities enable the recovery of their ability to play, plan, laugh, create, hope and write. The use of storytelling with a focus of survival, recovery and the remaking of self and mutual rehabilitation provides validation, belief and being heard. By combining these elements Broken to Brilliant has developed a program that allows the authors to share how they went about their ongoing recovery and reclaiming of one’s self to reach a sense of brilliance.

Project Outcomes:

Broken to Brilliant’s stories of strength and success program addresses the gaps identified by survivors and the research that there are limited services and programs that support the long-term recovery of domestic violence survivors.
Our words and our stories are helping to change lives daily. It is heart-warming to hear reader say: ‘I read your book while in a refuge ... it inspired me to set up my online business, so I am now financially free.’
The Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence 2016 found that the “current responses to family violence do not sufficiently emphasise recovery and restoration and may even impede it.
Jones et al (2017) reported that it would benefit practitioners when working with women who have been abused if more was known about the coping strategies that women adopt in both the shorter and longer term’.

Our stories of strength and success are making a difference. We are changing lives daily and helping others to be Brilliant.
Broken to Brilliant will evaluate the writing workshop via pre-post author surveys and a workshop evaluation form. The evaluation will determine if the authors have experienced personal growth, found the workshop therapeutic, if writing their story helped to turn a bad experience into a good one, did the workshop process give meaning to their experience, did the workshop help them to focus on the positives of what they have achieved.
