PROJECT SUMMARY

Support a drastically underfunded sector at a crucial moment in time for climate action.

As we are all too aware, Australia is at a critical juncture for climate action. The limited window for action demonstrated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s report released in August underscores the criticality of Australia committing to robust targets that achieve deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To achieve this, we need to accelerate public pressure on our political leaders to acknowledge that net zero by 2050 is not enough and to commit to meaningful climate policies this decade.

Funding is sought to immediately scale the work of Solutions for Climate Australia to help ensure that a sufficient number of MPs from all political parties receive strong and consistent engagement and pressure from their constituents on this issue.

Solutions for Climate Australia was established in early 2021 by Climate Action Network Australia (CANA), the membership-based network of climate advocacy groups, with a goal to achieve federal bipartisan support for climate action over the longer term. Solutions for Climate Australia is providing ‘backbone’ resourcing and financial support to the climate movement, with a focus on building capacity for climate advocacy and policy influence at the federal level.

One of the key lessons of the past decade is that bipartisanship is essential to achieving enduring and effective climate change policy in Australia. Solutions for Climate Australia is supporting a number of climate advocacy organisations through a project designed to deliver co-ordinated campaigns, policy asks and messaging with the ultimate goal to achieve robust 2030 emissions commitments from all political parties in the lead up to the federal election, to be held by May 2022.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

Solutions for Climate Australia is convening the Federal Climate Grassroots Alliance, a network of 18 national and local climate action organisations that are working across the political spectrum to build pressure for decisive climate policies in Australia. Work on-the-ground is concentrated in specific geographic locations where climate concern is high and with constituencies that are more likely to influence the major federal parties to act decisively on climate including middle suburban areas of mainland capital cities and far-north Queensland.

Project funding will largely be on-granted by Solutions for Climate Australia to members of the Federal Climate Grassroots Alliance to support scalable, co-ordinated and advocacy-based tactics focused on communicating the criticality of strong and effective climate policy including digital and social media campaigns and direct engagement through, for example, local electorate-based events. Activities funded through the project are not designed to influence the way electors vote. Rather the project aims to capitalise on broader social movements to make climate an issue for all parties to address in the coming federal election and beyond.

By offering a coordinated approach and directing additional resources and funding to where it is needed most, Solutions for Climate Australia can help amplify the collective impact of the Federal Climate Grassroots Alliance, meaning that the sum can truly be greater than the parts. Solutions for Climate Australia will work with its allied organisations to move quickly on high-priority tactics should an election be called sooner than expected in the coming months, while adapting to the likelihood of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns.
