PROJECT SUMMARY

Despite the transformative benefits of arts experiences, many young people, particularly in regional areas, have up to 40% less opportunity to engage with the arts than their peers . This lack of access hinders their social, emotional, and creative development. There is a continuous and urgent need to ensure equitable access to high-quality arts experiences for all young people, regardless of where they live.

The Monkey Baa Theatre Access Program addresses this inequity by supporting students in disadvantaged and regional areas to participate in creative theatre experiences. This program directly supports tickets and transportation for identified school groups to attend the national tour of our award-winning production, ‘Josephine Wants to Dance’.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

The Theatre Access Program is focused on ensuring equitable access to creative theatre experiences and the associated outcomes for our young audiences. We recognise the barriers to access including financial hardship and geographic location and this program provides a direct intervention to enable access to young people regardless of their circumstance.

Our research shows a broad range of impact areas, touching on emotional and social wellbeing, community engagement and personal and educational development. We see improved levels of confidence, creativity and critical thinking as well as increased social skills and real world connections. Access to creative theatre experiences provides a unique opportunity for growth and self development, and we are committed to ensuring all young people can access these opportunities.
